The Gift of Tongues being at the Beach By Father Stefan

In my previous blog, I recounted my experience of praying in tongues. Now I would like to give some reflections on tongues.

Jesus says, “Unless you become as a little child you shall not enter the kingdom of God.” Matt 18:3 A child trusts that their parent will be there. A child expects that their parents will give them what they need, not because they are good but because God is Good.

St Therese the Little Flower in her reflections commented, “When I am afraid I just throw myself into the arms of my Father in Heaven.” Do we not see a theology of tongues in the words, “Unless you become as a little child you shall not enter the kingdom of God.” Mat 18:3.

How did Jesus address His Father? Jesus used the word, Abba. Abba means Daddy. It sounds like the first words that a child might say. How many parents treasure the first words of their child? How much God treasures the words of his children.

A parent knows what the baby is saying and God knows what we are saying.  A baby doesn’t have the words to express what is in its heart .We don’t have the words to express to God what is in our hearts.  St Therese says that when she prayed she spoke to God freely from her heart, and the Good God knew what she was saying. She says that she uttered sounds that came from her heart.

When people had the honor of being in the private chapel with John Paul II they often heard him groan when he prayed. St Paul Says, “You do not know how to pray as you ought, but the Holy Spirit groans within us with words that cannot be expressed.” Rom 8:26 The prayers of John Paul II were so powerful that he groaned with the Spirit.

St Paul tells us that, “All creation is groaning and is in agony even now, but will share in the freedom of the sons of God,” Rom 8:22 When someone is praying in tongues they are praying with the same rhythm and flow of all creation.  We are praying with the same Creator Spirit.

Praying in tongues is a way to pray with all of creation.  I like to pray in tongues at the ocean. I Imagine the Spirit that is in me, being the same Creator Spirit that is moving the waves in and out.

One day The Spirit that groan within us will set all of creation Free, “Because all of creation is groaning but it will be set free and share in the freedom of the Sons of God.” Rom 8”26

The next time that you are at the ocean and you feel the waves touching your feet.  Remember the Same Spirit that is moving the ocean to touch your toes is the same Spirit that is praying in you.
