Pope Francis writes, “The Holy Spirit also enriches the entire evangelizing Church with different charisms. These gifts are meant to renew and build up the Church. They are not an inheritance, safely secured and entrusted to a small group for a safe keeping; rather they are gifts of the Spirit integrated into the body of the Church, drawn to the centre which is Christ and then channelled into an evangelizing impluse. A sure sign of the authenticity of a charism is its ecclesial character… To the extent that a charism is better directed to the heart of the Gospel, its exercise will be more ecclesial.”
Charisms serve the Church. The Church needs be open to the charisms. St Paul says, “Do not quench the Spirit do not despise prophecy.” I ask priests, “What charisms do you have?” It has been my experience that most priests have never thought about that question. Each priest has a unique charism. One priest says, “When a priest is flowing in the charisms that he has been given he renews himself. He doesn’t burn out.”
Jesus will renew His Church as He did in the 13th century if we are faithful to the gifts that He is pouring on His Church.
