Father Stefan Reflects on Today Gospel

St Matthew tells us, “At that time; Jesus walked by the Sea of Galilee, went up the mountain, and sat down there. Great crowds came to him, having with them the lame, the blind, the deformed, the mute and many others. They placed them at his feet and he cured them. The crowds were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the deformed made whole, the lame walking, and the blind able to see.”

This verse gives us the image of everyone being healed. Is it possible that we might see a day when everyone who come to mass or is prayed over will be healed? I believe a day will come when we will see miracles of physical healing in great number. It will happen from time to time that all will be healed. Recently, I had dinner with a priest that works in the Vatican and he said, “the though of many in the Vatican is that we are going to see many miracles of  physical healing through Pope Francis in Vatican Square. Pope Francis touches so many people when he moves around Vatican Square.”

Pope Francis said in a recent homily, “that when we pray we must pray with the attitude of victory. If we don’t approach prayer with the posture of victory we are already defeated.” Venerable Solanus Casey, who is believed to have worked thousands of miracle said, “the only thing, that can stop the power of God at work in our lives is our own doubt and fear. We must overcome sadness and anxiety which frustrates God’s merciful designs.” He even recommends they thank God now for what He will do in the future, whatever that may be. This kind of confidence in God, ‘puts Him on the spot.’

Here is an example from the life of St Anthony Claret (1890) that resembles today Gospel,”During my stay in Viladrau all the sick of the town, as well as those who were brought there from other places, were cured. As word of this spread, in whatever town I went to, people would bring me a large number of sick person suffering from all kinds of illness. There were so many sick and so many different illness, and I was so busy hearing confessions, that I didn’t have time for prescribing remedies. I told the people, instead, that I would commend them to God, and in the meantime I would make the sign of the Cross over them, ‘quoting Mark 16:18, where Jesus gives the signs that will mark those who believe in Him.’ After I did this, they said that they were cured.”
