Father Stefan reflects on Pope Francis Letter, ‘Joy of the Gospel.’ Something that I found interesting?

Pope Francis writes, “Each individual Christian and every community is called to be an instrument of God for the liberation and promotion of the poor, and enabling them to be fully a part of society. This demands that we be docile and attentive to the cry of the poor and come to their aid…’I have observed the misery of my people who are in Egypt; I have heard their cry on account of their taskmasters. Indeed, I know their suffering, and I have come down to deliver them…so I send you..'(Ex 3:7-8) If we, who are God’s means of hearing the poor, turn deaf ear to this plea, we oppose the Father’s will and his plan; that poor person ‘might cry to the Lord against you, and you would incur guilt.’ (Dt 15:9) A lack of solidarity towards his or her needs will directly affect our relationship with God, ‘For if in bitterness of soul he call down a curse upon you, his Creator will hear his prayer.'”

There are many reasons that prayers are not answered. Pope Francis is saying something that maybe many people have not considered. If we exploit the poor or are just indifferent to the poor. If they, ‘in bitterness of soul call down a curse upon you, his creator will hear his prayer.’

God will call down ‘a curse’ upon us if we exploit or are indifferent to the poor. The Catechism says, “God blesses those who come to the aid of the poor and rebukes those who turn away from them: ‘Give to him who begs from you, do not refuse him who would borrow from you.’ It is by what you have done for the poor that Jesus Christ will recognize his chosen one.”(2443)
