Pope Francis writes, “Thomas thus explains that, as far as external works are concerned, mercy is the greatest of all the virtues: ‘In itself mercy is the greatest of all the virtues, since all the others revolve around it and, more than this, it makes us for their deficiencies. This is particular to the superior virtue, as as such it is proper to God to have mercy, through which his omnipotence is manifested to the greatest degree.”
Jesus told St Faustina, “I am Love and Mercy Itself… I am the King of Mercy.” When the diary first came out it was put on the index of forbidden book by the Vatican. It was thought heretical to say that mercy was the greatest attribute of God. Mercy and Justice were always seen as equal. This changed when it was discovered that St Thomas affirmed what Jesus said to saint Fautina.
We are most like God when we show mercy. Jesus says, “blessed are the merciful for they will be shown mercy.”
Jesus said to saint Faustina. “My daughter, if I demand through you that people worship My mercy, you should be the first to distinguish yourself by this confidence in my mercy. I demand of you deeds of mercy, which are to arise out of love for me. You are to show mercy to your neighbors always and everywhere. you must not shrink from this or try to excuse or absolve yourself from it. I am giving you three ways of exercising mercy towards your neighbor: first -by deed, the second-by word, this third-by prayer. In these three degrees is contained the fullness of mercy, and it is an Unquestionable proof of love for Me, By this means a soul glorifies and pays reverence to My Mercy.”
