We read this morning in Mark Gospel, “He told his disciples to have a boat ready for him because of the crowd, so that they would not crush him. He had cured many and as a result, those who had diseases were pressing upon him to touch him. And whenever unclean spirits saw him they would fall down before him and shout, ‘You are the Son of God.’ he warned them sternly not to make him known.” (Mark 3:11-12)
Raniero Cantalamessa writes, “What was this power, this dynamis. that came out of Jesus? A magnetic fluid, a hypnotic current, a power of suggestion or something like that? Certainly not; it was the Holy Spirit! Luke said it, once and for all, at the beginning of Christ’s ministry: ‘Then Jesus, filled with the power ‘dynamis’ of the Spirit, returned to Galilee’ (Luke 4:14) and ‘the power of the Lord was with him to heal.'”(Luke 5;17) This power, which is the Holy Spirit, still now comes out of Jesus. Now that He is resurrected and is ‘declared to be the Son of God with power according to the spirit of holiness. (Roman 1:4) That power comes forth from him even more truly and more powerfully, if we can say that, than when He walked the earth. This Power heals everybody. This is the decisive point we need to understand and to believe right now. We should say, as Jesus did in the synagogue at Nazareth, ‘Today this scripture has been fulfilled!.'” (Luke 4:21)
When I anoint the sick with the sacrament of the anointing of the sick, I tell the sick person and often their family, “Jesus is Here by the Power of the Holy Spirit Jesus is here.” Everything that Jesus did in the gospel he wants to do today. Scripture says. “Jesus is the same yesterday today and forever.”
When I pray for people I have them imagine that they are in the Gospel Story and asking Jesus to heal them. In truth this is what is happening. Jesus is here and everything that He did in the Gospel he wants to do today. I tell people you see me, but in truth it is Jesus who is blessing you.
As one song say, “Jesus is here with the power to heal now.”
