Fr Stefan reflects on the Gospel May 32104

Jesus says in today Gospel, “Amen Amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these, because I am going to the Father.” (John 13:13) What are the works of Jesus they are His Miracles. Antonio Royo Marin, O.P. in his book, ‘The Great Unknown The Holy Ghost and His Gifts.” writes, “Jesus is saying that there will be saints that will work as many if not more miracles than Jesus himself.”

Bert Ghezzi in his book, ‘Mystics and Miracles’ writes about the miracles of many saints but for brevity sake focus on St Vincent Ferrer (1350-1419). Bert Ghezzi writes, “Saint Vincent Ferrer was a bona fide wonder-worker. Believe it performed his first miracle when still in the womb. A blind woman pressed her head against his mother’s stomach and was instantly healed. Once asked how many miracles he had worked Vincent modestly estimated 3000. The church carefully documented 874 of these when it declared him a saint.” One of the miracles that the Church used for his canonization was raising to life a man who was dead and cut into dozens of pieces.

My favorite miracle story of St Vincent is related in Bert Ghezzi book, “Vincent Ferrer worked his most famous miracle while he was under orders not to use his extraordinary powers. One day as he passed a construction site, a mason began to fall from the top of a building. “Brother Vincent,” he cried out, “save me!”

“Stay where you are,” shouted Vincent, “until I come back.” According to eyewitnesses the mason stopped, suspended in midair, while Vincent ran to get his superior’s permission to perform a miracle. “He’s waiting?” asked the superior, stunned by Vincent’s request. “Yes.” said Vincent.

“Well, go back and finish it off.” said  the superior. Vincent raced back to to hovering man.

“My superior says you may come down, “said Vincent, and the man floated safely to the ground.”

St Paul says in 1 Corinthians 12:10 when talking about charisms of the Holy Spirit, “To another the working of miracles. to another prophecy, to another the gift to distinguish between spirits.” What exactly is the charism of miracles. If someone has the charism of miracles than extraordinary miracles happen around them every day.

How is the charism of miracles different than the charism of healing? Vincent M Walsh in his book, “A Key to Charismatic Renewal in the Catholic Church writes, ” It differs mainly in two ways. First, the category of miracles covers more situations and is not limited to a healing process. Secondly, miracles are more powerful and more obviously a sign of God’s presence than healing.”
