I always get anxious when I see the engine light go on in my car dashboard. I think to myself, ‘What’s going on? I brought my car in last month when the engine light went on.!” Imagine that you are a car. Does the dove light go on? When all things are going well and you are moving in the Holy Spirit the dove light goes on. This shows that you are on the right track. That the engine of your soul is moving by the Holy Spirit.
What is this dove light? It is the gift of understanding. In today’s gospel we encounter two discouraged men walking towards Emmaus. Msgr Charles Pope writes, “The men cannot see or understand God’s plan. They cannot ‘see’ that he must be alive. They are quite blind to the glorious things that have already happened, just hour before. Their eyes are cast downward. And in this they are much like us, who also struggle to see and understand that we have already won the victory. Too easily we are discouraged, our eyes cast downward in depression rather than upward in faith.”
Pope Francis writes, ” The Spirit opens mind to comprehend all. Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to help us understand as God understand…It is a beautiful gift that the Lord has given all of us. It is the gift with which the Holy Spirit introduces us into intimacy with God and renders us participants in his plan of love for us.”
The two downcast men lacked the gift of understanding. The dove light was off on the dashboard of their heart. When the dove light went on, “With that, their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he vanished from their sight.”
You see Jesus was always with them, but they failed to see him because of their sadness and depression. But as soon as the dove light went on their eyes were opened and they recognized him. It is the same with us. Jesus is always with us but we fail to recognize him because of sadness and depression.
Ask Jesus to send the gift of understanding to you. When you see the dove light go on you will understand the events in your life in a new way. You will be filled with joy. As soon as the dove light went went on they immediately ran back full of joy proclaiming that Jesus is risen from the dead.
Again I ask you, “Is your dove light on?”
