Father Stefan reflects on St Therese and the the Baptism in the Holy Spirit and Fire

John the Baptist says about Jesus at his baptism, “He will baptize you with  the Holy Spirit and with fire.”(Lk 3:16) So many Christian have received the baptism in the Holy Spirit. The time is ripe to start praying that Jesus will baptize us with fire.

St Therese describes this experience, ” All of a sudden I was overtaken by such a violent love for the good God that I can only explain by saying that it was as if someone had plunged me entirely into fire. Oh what fire and what sweetness at the same time! I was burning with love. I felt that in one minute – one  second more I would not be able to stand this burning heat with dying. I understand then what the saints said of these states that they had so often experienced…”

St Therese quoting her favorite author, John of the Cross, writes, “At this time the soul sees herself so besieged by the Spirit of God and so forcefully overwhelmed by Him that all the rivers of the world seem to have assailed her and flooded-in upon her. The soul feels that all her former activities and passions have been drowned. But even though this flooding is done with so tremendous a force, it is without pain, since these rivers are rivers of peace…This divine assault…fills the soul wholly with peace and glory.”

When we consecrate ourselves to Holy Spirit; we are plunging ourselves into the fire of God’s love.

To quote Johnny Cash

Love is a burning thing

And it makes a fiery ring

Bound by wild desire

I fell into a ring of fire

I fell into a burning ring of fire

I went down, down, down and the flames went higher

And it burns, burns, the ring of fire

The ring of fire
