Father Stefan reflects on the opening and closing prayer at mass today June 5 Gifts of the Spirit

The priest prays in the collect this morning, “May your Spirit, O Lord, we pray imbue us powerfully with spiritual gifts.” And in the prayers after communion he prayed, “May the mysteries we have received, O Lord, we pray, enlighten us by the instructions they bring and restore us through our participation in them. that we may merit the gifts of the Spirit. Through Christ our Lord.”

Saint Basil the Great writes, “From the spirit comes foreknowledge of the future, understanding of the mysteries of faith, insights into the hidden meaning of Scripture, and other spiritual gifts, through the Spirit we become citizens of heaven, we are admitted to the company of the angels, we enter into eternal happiness, and abide in God. Through the Spirit we acquire a likeness to God; indeed, we attain what is beyond our most sublime aspirations-we become God.”

Blessed Mariam, the Lily of Palestine, had many gifts of the spirit. I think my favorite is how she would float up to the top of trees and pray her rosary. She also said that if priests would offer a mass once a month for the intentions of the Holy Spirit they would soon be raising the dead. She had a great devotion to the Holy Spirit.

Here is a little prayer she wrote to the Holy Spirit

Holy Spirit, inspire me

Love of God, consume me

Along the true road, lead me

Mary my Mother, look upon me

With Jesus, bless me

From all evil, from all illusion

From all danger, preserve me

Blessed Mariam, the Lily of Palestine, pray for us that we may receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit
