Father Stefan reflects on reading of the day June 24, “You are called me from birth”

We read in Isaiah, “The Lord called me from birth, from my mother’s womb he gave me my name.” (Isaiah 49: 2) From Luke we read, “When the time arrived for Elizabeth to have her child she gave birth to a son. Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown his great mercy towards her, and they rejoiced with her. When they came on the eight day to circumcise the child, they were going to call him Zechariah after his father, but his mother said in reply, ‘No. he will be called John.’ But they answered her , ‘There is no one among your relatives who has this name.’ So they made signs, asking his father what he wished him to be called. He asked for a tablet  and wrote, ‘John is his name.'” (Luke 1:57-59)

Jesus has called you from your mother’s womb. In fact, Jesus has called you from before the creation of the world. Jesus has a mission for you. Pope Francis in his homily on Elisha the prophet said, “That when God calls a person for a mission he prepares them for the mission.” Elisha was taught by Elijah. After Elijah was taken up to heaven in a whirlwind. Elisha picked up Elijah’s mantle that had fallen from him, and went back and stood at the bank of the Jordan. Wielding the mantle that had fallen from Elijah. Elisha struck the water in his turn and said, ‘Where is the Lord, the God of Elijah ?’

We were given a mission by the Holy Spirit. Jesus has called us.The Holy Spirit has empowered us for this mission. You are precious to Jesus and He has called you to do something only you can do. You will discover your true identity as a Christian when you discover your mission in the Church.

Trust that the Holy Spirit is giving you everything you need for this mission in the Church. You are a missionary disciple.
