Pope Francis writes, “Saint Peter and Saint Paul, so different from each other on a human level, were personally chosen by the Lord Jesus and they responded to the call offering their whole lives…In both, the grace of Christ accomplished great things, He transformed them. And how he transformed them! Peter, who denied Christ three times, and Paul, who harshly persecuted the early Christians, allowed themselves to be transformed by the mercy of God. Their example, he said, shows us the path towards salvation. Even us, if by chance we fall in a grave sin and in the darkest night, God is always capable of transforming us, as He transformed Peter and Paul; transforming our hearts and forgiving us all, transforming the darkness of sin into a dawn of light,…God is like that: he transforms us, he always forgives us, as he did with Peter and as he did with Paul.”
Allow yourself to be transformed by the Mercy of God. The Holy Spirit is able to transform the darkness of sin into a dawn of new life. Peter denied our Lord, and Paul persecuted the Church. The Mercy of God transformed them to be two pillars on which the Church rests.
Saint Francis of Assisi was asked, “Why is the whole world following after you?” Saint Francis said, “It is because I am the weakest sinner.” Saint Therese the little flower also said, “God choose me because I am the weakest person on the face of the earth. If God found another person weaker than me. He would have chosen that person.”
Our weakness attracts the Mercy of God. May we never lose hope. May we always trust in the Mercy of God. May we be vessels of His Mercy and Love.
