Reflection for July 5 “New Wine goes into New Wine Skins”

The disciples of John approached Jesus and said,
“Why do we and the Pharisees fast much,
but your disciples do not fast?”
Jesus answered them, “Can the wedding guests mourn
as long as the bridegroom is with them?
The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them,
and then they will fast.
No one patches an old cloak with a piece of unshrunken cloth,
for its fullness pulls away from the cloak and the tear gets worse.
People do not put new wine into old wineskins.
Otherwise the skins burst, the wine spills out, and the skins are ruined.
Rather, they pour new wine into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved.” (Matt 9:14-17)

Raniero Cantalamessa in his book, ‘The Eucharist Our Sanctification’ writes, ” Jesus says, ‘My Blood is drink indeed.’; it envokes the ‘new wine’ that of the true vine, suggested by the wine at the wedding of Cana; it recalls the theme of spiritual joy and gladness of heart (Ps 104:15) thus making the Eucharist a foretaste of the heavenly banquet of the kingdom of God and the marriage supper of the the Lamb. (Mk 14:25; Rev 19:9) ‘The Holy Spirit’ wrote St Cyprian, ‘is not silent about the mystery of this blood.’ In fact, in the psalms he tell us, ‘My cup overflows’ (Ps 23:6) The gladness of heart that comes from the Lord’s chalice and his blood is not, however, the same as ordinary wine. The Lord’s chalice gladdens the heart of man to make him sober and it leads him to spiritual wisdom. And is ordinary wine distends the mind and relaxes the spirit, dispersing all unhappiness, the Lord’s Blood and the chalice of salvation dispel the memory of the old self making us forget old habits and freeing us from all unhappiness accumulated in our hearts because of our sins, for the joy of divine forgiveness. It is with all this in mind that we can still exclaim, in a well-known prayer, ‘Blood of Christ, inebriate me!'”

The new wine is the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit also gives us new wine skins. The Holy spirit transforms our hearts so that we can receive this new wine.

Mary was able to receive this new wine. When we drink from the chalice of the Holy Spirit we are give a foretaste of the joys of Heaven.

There is no drinking age to drink of this new wine of the Holy Spirit. Come and taste and see that the Lord is good.
