This is what John the Baptist proclaimed:
“One mightier than I is coming after me.
I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals.
I have baptized you with water;
he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
It happened in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee
and was baptized in the Jordan by John.
On coming up out of the water he saw the heavens being torn open
and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him.
And a voice came from the heavens,
“You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”
We read in ‘Christfideles laici’ ” Baptism regenerates us in the life of the son of God: unites us to Christ and to his Body, the Church; anoints us in the Holy Spirit, making us spiritual temples. The Apostle Peter defines the baptized as ‘living stones’ founded on Christ, the ‘corner stone’ and destined to ‘be raised up into a spiritual building’ (1 pt 2:5) The image introduces us to another aspect of the newness of the Christian life coming from Baptism and described by the Second Vatican Council: ‘By regeneration and the anointing of the Holy Spirit into a spiritual house…Not only has our head been anointed but we, his body, have also been anointed…therefore anointing comes to all Christian…Clearly we are the Body of Christ because we are all ‘anointed’ and in him are ‘christs’ that is ‘anointed ones’ as well as Christ himself, ‘The Anointed One.’ In a certain way, then, it thus happens that with head and body the whole Christ is formed.”
“With this spiritual ‘unction’ Christian can repeat in an individual way the words of Jesus: ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach the good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord. (LK 4:18-19) Thus with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in Baptism and Confirmation, the baptized share in the same mission of Jesus as the Christ, the Savior, Messiah.”
The same Holy Spirit that anointed Jesus at His Baptism anointed us at our baptism and confirmation. Cantalamessa writes in his book, ‘The Holy Spirit in the Life of Jesus’, “The baptism in the river Jordan creates something new in Christ’s spiritual itinerary, so much so indeed that the very name ‘Christ’ was derived from this moment. We are taking about a functional newness, that is, in the mission…It manifest itself by grandiose and immediate effects: miracle, preaching with authority, the ushering on of the kingdom of God, victory over demons.”
Question of the day: Do you experience the love and power of the Holy Spirit in your life? Do we recognize that any fruit that we accomplish flows from the Holy Spirit?
Thought for the day: Trying to evangelize without the Holy Spirit is as futile as trying to drive a car without an engine or any gas.
Come Holy Spirit Come to me Come
Holy Spirit anointed Jesus at His Baptism
Come and anoint me again with your all powerful
With your all loving Holy Spirit
Jesus I need the the anointing of the Holy Spirit
Fill me anew with your Holy Spirit
Reawaken within me the Holy Spirit that was given to me at my Baptism and Confirmation
