Teaching on Holy Spirit and image of water Holy Spirit is the Fountain ‘Soul Institute’

Water is one but it has many different effects on the earth. Father Bransfield in his book, ‘Living the Beatitudes’ writes, “As an upward surge that moves forth from strong and abundant fountains, the fountain is also an image for the spiritual life. In fountains, water leaps into action. So, too. in us, as Blessed Columba Marmion emphasizes, through Baptism and Confirmation the Holy Spirit becomes a living fountain in the soul of the Christian. Balthasar draws on the same image. The Holy Spirit surges within us, not to control us, but to prompt, influence, and direct us in the way of God’s grace. He is not like a water cannon that compels and forces us; he is like that fascinating fountain that invites us and calls us deeper. He bestows sanctifying grace on the soul so that the Trinity may dwell within us and we may become a new creation.”
We can see the different effects water has in a garden.  The garden in an image of the church.  As there are many different flowers in a garden the Water of the Holy Spirit gives many different gifts and vocations to the Church.  The Holy Spirit is one, but it has many different effects in our soul and in the Church.

We read in the book of Genesis, “At the time when the Lord God made the earth and the heavens-while as yet there was no field shrub on earth and no grass of the field had sprouted, for the Lord God had sent no rain upon the earth and there was no man to till the soil, but a stream was welling up out of the earth and was watering all the surface of the ground-the Lord God formed man out of the clay of the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life, and so man became a living bring.”(Gn 2:4-7) Father Bransfield writes, “Notice that the author is saying that there was no vegetative or human life. Without rain, there was no water, and so no life. Even the clay that God takes up depends on the water-from the ‘stream that was welling up.’ Water is the gift of God that propels and prepares for the creation of life.”

Prayer for the day
Come Holy Spirit and send your rain upon us
Come Holy Spirit refresh us
Come Holy Spirit give us this living water
