Feast of St Joseph and the Gifts of the Holy Spirit teaching from ‘Soul Institute’ Gifts to Equip the Saints

On this Solemnity of St Joseph. Saint Bernadine of Siena tells us in the Liturgy of the Hours, ” There is a general rule concerning all special graces granted to human being. Whenever the divine favor chooses someone to receive a special grace, or to accept a lofty vocation. God adorns the person chosen with all the gifts of the Spirit needed to fulfill the task at hand. This general rule is especially verified in the case of Saint Joseph, the foster-father of our Lord and the husband of the Queen of our world, enthroned above the angels. He was chosen by the eternal Father as the trustworthy guardian and protector of his greatest treasure, namely, his divine Son and Mary, Joseph’s wife. He carried out this vocation with complete fidelity until at last God called him, saying: Good and faithful servant, enter into the joy of your Lord.”

We read in scripture, “And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ.…(Eph 4:12)

When God calls someone to a mission in the Church. He equips them with the gifts necessary to fulfill that mission. Saint Joseph is a perfect example of this truth. What is true is the life of Saint Joseph is also true with you and me. However, it is also true that we need to ask the Holy Spirit again and again for the gifts that are needed. If we ask in faith. God will never fail to give us the gifts that are needed to fulfill our mission in the Church.

Thought for the day: if you are married, single or a priest. Whatever, vocation you have. Ask the Holy Spirit to pour out his gifts upon you so that you can fulfill your vocation in the Church in a more perfect way.
