:Again Jesus left the district of Tyre
and went by way of Sidon to the Sea of Galilee,
into the district of the Decapolis.
And people brought to him a deaf man who had a speech impediment
and begged him to lay his hand on him.
He took him off by himself away from the crowd.
He put his finger into the man’s ears
and, spitting, touched his tongue;
then he looked up to heaven and groaned, and said to him,
“Ephphatha!”— that is, “Be opened!” —
And immediately the man’s ears were opened,
his speech impediment was removed,
and he spoke plainly.
He ordered them not to tell anyone.
But the more he ordered them not to,
the more they proclaimed it.
They were exceedingly astonished and they said,
“He has done all things well.
He makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”
Pope Francis tells us, “Listening to God sets us free and give us the happiness that can never be guaranteed by ‘what the world has to offer.’ ‘Obeying the Lord means listening to his voice.’ This means not listening to what the world proposes, ‘proposals of sin’ or of compromise that draws us away from the Lord. It is the Holy Spirit who gives us the courage to go on to continue on the journey.”
Jesus heals the deaf man so that he can hear again. Can we hear the voice of God in our life? What is the Holy Spirit saying to us? The Holy Spirit is saying to us Jesus Jesus Jesus.
We are all excited to see and hear Pope Francis as he comes to America later this month.
Let us listen to what Saint John Paul II told the Church in the United States in his closing homily.
“Jesus Christ, the faithful Witness, the Pastor of pastors, is in your midst, because we are gathered in his name. (Mk 18:20) With us is the Spirit of the Lord which guides the Church to the fullness of truth and renews her with the revealed word in a new Pentecost.
Be Faithful to your baptism, in this centenary give new life to the great gift you have received, turn your hearts and gaze to the centre and origin, to him who is the basis of all happiness, the fullness of everything! Be open to Christ, welcome the Spirit, so that a new Pentecost may take place in every community! A new humanity, a joyful one, will arise from your midst; you will experience again the saving power of the Lord and ‘what was spoken to you by the Lord’ will be fulfilled. What ‘was spoken to you’, America, is his love for you, his love for each of you, for all your families and people…
Church of America, today the Lord is passing by. He is calling you. In this moment of grace, he is once again calling you by name and renewing his covenant with you. May you listen to his voice so that you may know true, total joy and enter into his peace. (Ps94:7)”
Ask the Holy Spirit to open the ears of your heart so that you might hear the Holy Spirit say to you Jesus Jesus Jesus.
