Today is the Feast Day of Our Lady of Sorrows Sept 15 reflections from the ‘Soul Institute’

Mothers and fathers often stand at the foot of the bed of their ill child in a way that is similar to how Mary stood at the foot of the cross.  There is one big difference. We are often like Mary in sharing her sorrows. However, the cross of sickness that we bear often blinds us to the Victory of the Cross. Yesterday was the Feast of the Triumph of the Cross. The Church prayed these words about the Cross “O glorious cross, on you the King of angels was victorious.”

Mary was at the same time Our Mother of Sorrow and our Mother of Victory at the foot of the cross.  An early church father said “The reason that scripture doesn’t recount Jesus appearing to his mother on Easter Sunday was that Mary by virtue of her faith experienced the resurrection of her son on the cross.” Raniero Cantalamessa in his book ‘Mary Mirror of the Church’ writes “An Image of Mary beneath the cross such as the one we get from the Stabat Mater, in which Mary is only ‘sad, afflicted, sorrowful’ would not be complete. It wouldn’t take into account that it was John who shows her there and that the cross signified glory and victory to him. At Calvary, she was not just the ‘Mother of Sorrows’ but also the ‘Mother of Hope.’…In an inexplicable way, which perhaps she was unable to explain to herself, Mary too, just as Scripture says of Abraham, believed that God was able to raise her son ‘even from the dead.'”

Many people stand at the foot of the cross in the hospital rooms.  We can ask Mary to give us a share in her victorious faith. Pope Francis said in his homily on July 1 2013 “Abraham speaks to the Lord with courage and insistence to defend Sodom from destruction. ‘Abraham is a courageous man and he prays with courage.’ Abraham ‘feels the power to speak face-to-face with the Lord and tries to defend the city.’ And he does this with insistence. So in the Bible, we see that prayer must be courageous.”

When we talk about courage, we always think about apostolic courage, going to preach the Gospel, these things…But there is also courage before the Lord. The frankness before the Lord: going to the Lord courageously to ask for things. It may be funny, and that fine, but it’s funny because Abraham is talking with the Lord in a special way, with this courage, and we can’t quite tell if we’re looking at a man who is praying or a ‘Phoenician trader,’ because he keeps lowering the price to ten…Saint Teresa of Avila ‘speaks of prayer as a negotiation with the Lord,’ and this ‘is possible only when there is familiarity with the Lord. It is tiring, that’s is true, but this is prayer, this is getting a grace from God.”

With all this in mind let us all pray this Litany to our Lady of Victory. That in everything in our life we will share in the Victory of Christ.

V. Pray for us, O Blessed Lady of Victory!
R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let Us Pray.

O Victorious Lady! Thou who has ever such powerful influence with Thy Divine Son, in conquering the hardest of hearts, intercede for those for whom we pray, that their hearts being softened by the rays of Divine Grace, they may return to the unity of the true Faith, through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Salve Regina

Hail Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To Thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To Thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in the valley of tears.
Turn, then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us.

And after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of Thy womb, Jesus.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary, Pray for us,
O Holy Mother of God:

That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Memorare

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known that anyone who,
fled to Thy protection,
implored Thy help,
and sought Thy intercession,
was left unaided.
Inspired with this confidence,
I fly unto Thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother.
To Thee I come; before Thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful.
O Mother of the Word Incarnate! despise not my petitions,
but in Thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.
