We read in the first reading “Nathan said to David ‘Thus says the Lord God of Israel..I anointed you king of Israel. I rescued you from the hand of Saul. I gave you your Lord’s House.”
Homily on the Kingly Anointing. At Baptism after the priest anoints the baby on the forehead he prays “God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ has freed you from sin, given you a new birth by water and the Holy Spirit, and welcomed you into his holy people. he now anoints you with the chrism of salvation. As Christ was anointed Priest, Prophet, and King, so may you live always as a member of his body, sharing everlasting life.”
Cantalamessa in his book ‘The Holy Spirit in the life if Jesus’ writes ” The Christian life is a choice between two kingdoms, that our warfare is not only against flesh and blood. It is required of us that we proclaim in Spirit and in power that Jesus has overcome all powers, and that henceforth he is the one, true Lord and that there is nothing to be afraid of, for the the one who is in you is greater that the one who is in the world.’ (1 John 4:4)
St Paul writes in Colossians “May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy, giving thanks for the Father, who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. He has delivered us from the dominion of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”(Col 1:12-14)
By virtue of the Kingly Anointing we share in Christ Victory over the kingdom of darkness. After the baptism of Jesus we read ‘The Spirit drove Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted.” Jesus is the new Adam who says no to the devil and yes to God. Jesus conquered the devil with his free will. “Jesus frees himself from Satan, to free everyone from Satan; this is the meaning of the episode of the temptations, seem in the light of the whole Gospel. And indeed, as we read on after the episode, we really for get the impression of an irresistible advance, as if it were, of the front of light, as it throws back the demonic front of darkness. At Jesus’ approach, the demons take fright, they tremble, they beg not to be driven out and try to make terms: ‘What have you do do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? have you come to destroy is? I know who you are – the Holy One of God.” It is holiness that drive the devil out of hiding. Saints know more about the devil than anyone. St Therese the Little Flower would say “I find it amazing that the devil is frightened of a little girl.” A friend of mine had a vision of the devil and Jesus. And she saw that at the final judgement the devil as he truly is…so small and weak, weaker than a little mouse.
It is often when someone receive a powerful anointing that the devil becomes interested in them.” This happen because the anointing brings new power to the person to push back the kingdom of darkness. (In my own life. It was only after I received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit that I came to realize that the devil is real. That he is a roaring lion seeking to destroy.
St Paul tells is in Ephesians “Put on the whole armor of God, you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we are not contending against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spiritual rulers of this present darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take the whole armor of God that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all to stand. Stand therefore, having fastened the belt of truth around your waist, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with equipment of the gospel of peace; besides all these, taking the shield of faith, with which you can quench all the flaming darts of the Evil One. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit which is the word of God.”
In the struggle with the devil Jesus fulfills his kingly mission, Jesus overpowers the kingdom of Satan. Jesus says “If it is by the Spirit of God that I drive out the devil than the kingdom of God has come upon you.” Peter says in Acts about Jesus ” You know the word which was proclaimed throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism which John preached: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed by the devil and God was with him.” (Act 10 37-40)
Cantalamessa writes about ‘The discerning of spirits’ “In the New Testament, the demonic powers are called by the same tern as designates the divine power of the Holy Spirit; pneuma, spirit. The Holy Spirit however does not speak directly and immediately with us but rather expresses himself in and through our intelligence, will and feeling. By analogy, it would be an error to suppose that Satan would speak directly and immediately within us and answer question. Not therefore a person, but only a personal power, that is to say a power endowed with intelligence and will, pursing the very precise aim of destroying human being’s relationships with God and with one another.”
John Paul II in Christifideles Laici’ writes ” Because the lay faithful belong to Christ, Lord and King of the Universe, they share in his kingly mission and are called to him to spread that Kingdom in history. They exercise their kingship as Christian, above all in the spiritual combat in which they seek to overcome in themselves the kingdom of sin (Rom 6:12) and then to make a gift of themselves as as to serve, in justice and in charity, Jesus who is himself present in all his brothers and sisters, above all in the very least.” (Mt 25:40)
Jesus thank you for letting me share in your anointing as priest prophet and king. Today in a special way give me a greater share in your kingly anointing so that I can push back the kingdom of darkness both in myself and in the world. let we share in the inheritance of the saints in light. deliver me from the kingdom of darkness and transfer me into the kingdom of light. Thank you Jesus for giving me a greater share today in your Kingly Anointing
