Father Stefan already thinking of Homily for Sunday June 19 ‘Who do U say I am?’ Reflection from the ‘Soul Institute’

This Sunday we will read “Jesus and His disciples set out for the villages of Caerarea Philippi. Along the way he asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say that I am?’ They said in reply, ‘ John the Baptist, other Elijah, still others one of the prophets.’ And he asked the, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Peter said to him in reply, ‘You are the Christ.'”

We can only come to know Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit. We read in  the Catechism of the Catholic Church “No one can say ‘Jesus is Lord’ except by the Holy Spirit.’ ‘God has sent the Spirit of his son into our hearts, crying, ‘Abba! Father!’ This knowledge of faith is possible in the Holy Spirit: to be in touch with Christ, we must first have been touched by the Holy Spirit. He comes to meet us and kindles faith in us.” (CCC 683)

The Catechism tells us in another place “Every time we begin to pray to Jesus it is the Holy Spirit who draws us on the way of prayer…Since he teaches us to pray by recalling Christ, how could we not pray to the Spirit too? This is why the Church invites us to call upon the Holy Spirit every day. especially at the beginning and the end of every important action.”(CCC 2670)

Pope Francis in his homily on May 13 2013  said “No so many Christians do not know who the Holy Spirit is, What the Holy Spirit is like. And sometimes we hear: ‘But I’m doing just fine with the Father and the Son, because I pray the Our Father to the Father, I receive communion with the Son, But with the Holy Spirit I don’t know what to do…’ Or they say: ‘The Holy Spirit is the dove, the one who gives is the seven gifts.’ But this way the poor Holy Spirit is always last, and does not find a good place in our heart.”

The Holy Spirit leads us to Jesus. St Paul tells us in 1 Cor 12: 3 “No one can say ‘Jesus is Lord’ except by the Holy Spirit.”
