Father Stefan Notes for 2 nd week of ordinary time the Holy Spirit comes upon Jesus in the form of a ‘Dove’

We will read in the Gospel Today ‘John bore witness ‘I saw the Spirit descend as a dove from Heaven and remain him….I myself did not know him; but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.'”

We read in Genesis ‘The Earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the earth.’

The word the Spirit was Hovering is meant to give an image of the Dove of the Holy Spirit. The hovering is like a Dove. In the same way when a priest puts his hands over the bread and wine during the ‘epiclesis’ the hands of the priest are meant to be a image of the ‘Dove of the Holy Spirit.’ The action of the priest is meant to invoke the Holy Spirit ‘Dove’ over the void of creation in Genesis.

Song Come Holy Spirit Heavenly Dove
‘Come Holy Spirit Heavenly Dove
With all they quickening power
Kindle the flame of sacred love
In these cold hearts of ours

Come Holy Spirit Heavenly Dove
With all they quickening power
Come give us the Savior Love
And Kindle that Love in our Hearts’

As Noah released the Dove out of the Ark. The Dove came back with an Olive Branch in its mouth. The Dove proclaim a New Creation. The Dove of the Holy Spirit has descended on Jesus Today. The Dove has broken the Olive Branch on Jesus. And from the Olive Branch the Oil of the Holy Spirit has descended on Jesus. The Dove of the Holy Spirit proclaims that the flood is over. When we were baptized the Father sent the Dove of the Holy Spirit upon us and the Father said ‘You are my beloved Child in whom I am well pleased.’ Saint John Paul II wrote ‘The symbol of the dove indicates forgiveness of sin, reconciliation with God and renewal of the covenant.’

St Cyril says ‘Having been baptized into Christ and have put on Christ you have been made like the Son of God. Having become partakers of Christ. You are properly called Christ. And of you God says ‘Touch not my Christ or anointed’ You have been made Christ.’

The Father says to us ‘behold, you are beautiful, my love, behold you are beautiful! Your eyes are doves.’

We are the the little dove of Jesus. the Dove is symbol of Purity and Peace
We are too be like the the Dove and be ‘Pure and Peaceful.’

‘Once on a Pentecost Sunday ‘Saint Theresa of Avila experienced an ecstasy. She saw a dove come down and rest on her head, its wings like flakes of mother-of-pearl glowing brightly. But far from upsetting her. Her spirit ‘Was filled with great peace and began to rejoice in sweetness and quiet.’

‘The Church is the House of the Dove’
St Basil Speaks of the ‘Eucharist as the Dove.’ ‘The Eucharist is Clothed with the Holy Spirit.’

Look- the Symbol over the tabernacle is a Dove. The Eucharist is reserved in the Heavenly Dove.

This Year is the 100 year since Fatima. If you look at the feet of a statue of Our Lady of Fatima you often see 3 doves. This is because of a little miracles concerning the Statue of Fatima in Portugal in 1946.

Ask Mary to send upon you the Dove of the Holy Spirit
Mary I ask you today ‘Send Down upon Us. Send Down upon me the Dove of the Holy Spirit. Help me to hear that I am the ‘The Little Dove that Jesus delight to see’
Mary send the Dove of the Holy Spirit upon me and Help me to be Pure Peaceful and Simple like a Little Dove.
