Father Stefan Working on Homily for this Sunday starting to make working notes ‘You are the salt of the Earth’5 th Sunday in Ordinary Time

In the Gospel we will read this Sunday:
Jesus said to his disciples ‘You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses it taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lamp stand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.’ (Mt 5 13-16)

Salt Preserves, Cleanses, Brings out Taste.

Jesus says in Mark (9:49) ‘Everyone will be salted with fire.’
‘But if salt looses it taste, with what can it be seasoned. It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.’ When we fell by original sin. We were wounded but not depraved. Salt cannot help season or preserve spoiled meat. We need this spiritual salt to prevent our wounded souls and hearts from becoming spoiled. But more importantly this spiritual salt brings out the life of Jesus in our hearts. But if our hearts are ‘spoiled and corrupt’ this salt can do no good in our soul. This Spiritual Salt ‘Is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.’

In Genesis 19:26 When Lot and His wife were fleeing Sodom. We are told ‘But Lot’s wife looked back and she became a pillar of salt.’ In a Jewish Mid Rash tradition Lot’s Wife cried so many tears of sadness for the sake of Sodom. That she became a pillar of salt.

Leviticus 2: 13 tells us ‘ You shall season all your cereal offering with salt; you shall not let the salt of the covenant with your God be lacking from your cereal offering.’

In 2 Kings 21 the Prophet Elisha ‘He said bring me a bowl and put salt in it’ so they brought it to him. Then he went into the spring of water and threw salt in it, and said ‘Thus said the Lord, I have made this water wholesome; henceforth neither death nor miscarriage shall come from it. So the water has been wholesome to this day.”

In the Blessing of Holy Water the Priest used Blessed Salt and said this prayer

‘O Salt, creature of God, I exorcise you by the living God, By the True God By the Holy God. By the God who ordered Elisha the prophet, so that its life-giving powers might be restored. I exorcise you so that you may become a means of salvation for believers, that you may bring health of soul and body to all who make use of you, and that you may put to flight and drive away form the places where you are sprinkled; every apparition, villainy, turn of devilish deceit, and every unclean spirit; abjured by him who will come to judge the living and the dead and the world by fire. Amen.’

Jesus tells us in Mary Gospel ‘Salt is good, but if the salt has lost it saltiness, how will you season it? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another.’ (Mk 9:50)

Paul say in Colossians ‘Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer every one.’ (Col 4:6)

Salt season and preserves food. Spiritual salt preserves and seasons our heart and tongue.

New born were cleaned in salt. We read in the prophet Ezekiel 16:4 ‘And as for your birth, on the day you were born your cord was not cut, nor were you washed with water to make you clean, nor were you rubbed with salt or wrapped in cloths.’ New Born were rubbed with salt. In Baptism ‘Before the candidates enter the Church or baptistry, salt is blessed with an exorcism, and a pinch can be put in the mouth of the candidates. However, in modern practice this can be skipped.’

Leviticus 2: 13 tells us ‘ You shall season all your cereal offering with salt; you shall not let the salt of the covenant with your God be lacking from your cereal offering.’

When we read in Mark Gospel ‘That everyone will be salted with Fire.’

As salt was used in the offering in Leviticus. Jesus sends the the Spiritual Salt. The Holy Spirit in the image of salt into the offering of our hearts. Salt is used for cleaning and purifying the offering. So the Holy Spirit Salt that Jesus will spend to us will cleanse and purify our hearts. So that Our Hearts will be a true offering to Jesus.

Being ‘Salted with Fire’ will often burn, but that is because our hearts are often corrupt and need to be cleansed by this burning Spiritual Salt. This Spiritual Salt will preserve our hearts souls, so that we will be a pleasant fragrance of Jesus Christ in the world. This Spiritual Salt will be healing to the world and prevent it from falling into corruption. This Spiritual Salt of the Holy Spirit Fire bring healing to the world.
